He’s a black belt in taekwondo, international pro muay thai fighter, and an amateur boxer, all as well as spending time coaching others.

We spoke to Shane to find out a little bit about his favourite gear and training advice.

Hi Shane! What’s your favourite piece of fight gear?

My Sweet Science focus mitts.

What sort of training do you use them for?

Holding mitts for clients/training partners to improve hand speed, reaction time, footwork, and accuracy.

How long have you been using them?

Sweet Science is a fairly new brand started by my boxing coach. I’ve had the same pair for a little over a year now.

What was the reason behind you getting them in the first place?

The brand was started by my boxing coach, and he asked if I would wear the gear in my YouTube videos. I instantly fell in love with the gloves and mitts.

What is it that you like most about the focus mitts and why?

The boxing mitts are my tools of the trade! It’s like a hammer to a carpenter; a brush to a painter. You gotta have a good pair of mitts to make your fighters better. I also love the old school, tough look of the Sweet Science logo.

With your fight gear, do you tend to stick to a few select brands, or do you like to use a nice variety?

If I know and trust a brand, I will stick with them. But I do have a wide range of stuff in my gym bag right now.

Is there any other gear you couldn’t train without?

I love my Hypnotik training equipment — thai pads, kick shield, and shin guards. I also always carry my WODNation speed jumprope and SISU mouthguard.

What pushes you to do your best during training?

Visualizing my potential opponent training harder than me. That always pushes me to run the extra mile, go an extra round.

What’s your best training tip for aspiring fighters?

Write your goals down. Literally. Hang them up in places you will always see them like your computer screen, bathroom mirror, etc. Constantly remind yourself of why you started in the first place.
